DFE Driving Evaluation and Training Program

Expert practitioners with specialized training in driver rehabilitation will administer the comprehensive driving evaluation to assess mental, physical, and visual abilities required for safe driving. The comprehensive driving evaluation will consist of two parts: one part DFE’s one of-a-kind Mobile Driving Clinic and the second part behind the wheel in an instructor vehicle.

PART 1: CLINICAL EVALUATION

DFE’s Mobile Driving Clinic will arrive at your place of residence or local hospital incorporating various standardized test batteries, tools and a fully integrated clinical driving simulator system utilizing concise data analysis for basic driving functional abilities in a zero-risk environment. Each Mobile Driving Clinic Would Include the following:

• Reaction times, needed for stopping fast enough to avoid a crash;
• Basic visual acuity, or sharpness of vision;
• Useful Field of Vision;
• Decision making, judgment. and planning (e.g., needed for making left turns)

PART 2: FUNCTIONAL BEHIND THE WHEEL EVALUATION

The Behind-The-Wheel or On-Road portion of the evaluation is conducted in an instructor vehicle and is able to be modified to help those individuals that may be needing specialized adaptive equipment. The on-road evaluation identifies the driver’s strengths and weaknesses during actual driving which may lead to instrumental ways to keep the driver driving safer longer if deemed appropriate.

FOLLOWING THE CLINICAL EVALUATION

Upon completion of a DFE Driving Evaluation the therapist will provide their recommendations based on the overall results to help determine objectively the client’s driving fitness. Recommendations about strategies, special equipment, and training to improve overall safety may be indicated at that time with the final results being sent to the referring MD. If the evaluation indicates the need for further investigation or cessation of driving due to unsafe driving behaviors the therapist can help you understand why this is the most appropriate option for your safety and those on the road.
